News & Events​ 5G-EPICENTRE Plenary Meeting The 5G-EPICENTRE project Plenary Meeting took place at Berlin, Germany between the 28th and 29th of November 2023. The two-day Plenary Meeting was hosted by HHI Fraunhofer.  The plenary meeting also offered a great opportunity for the Consortium to meet and synchronize their upcoming activities towards the finalization of the project.  The meeting was opened by the Coordinator, who set the agenda and posed the main management milestones of the project. Afterward, the Work Package leaders presented the progress of the core Tasks of the project, while discussing in person any potential barriers and bottlenecks. During the WPs sessions status updates were provided, with a description of the work performed and the next milestones, during the last period of the project. In addition, during the plenary meeting, the roadmap and the main core actions were co-decided, while the most suitable propositions were adopted after fruitful discussions by all partners. Special emphasis was given both on technical work and the testing of the 5G-EPICENTRE platform, the progress of the eight (8) Use Cases and their compilation, the experimentation program of 5G-EPICENTRE and more specifically on the Project’s Dissemination and Communication actions. Last but not least, on the first day of the meeting, a demonstration on the project’s results took place. 

News & Events​ 5G-EPICENTRE @ SIRESP Bootcamp 5G-EPICENTRE was present at the SIRESP Bootcamp event, which took place in Algarve, Portugal, from 20th to 24th November2023 through the participation of two partners, OneSource and Altice Labs. The event was organized by SIRESP, the Portuguese public body in charge of managing, operating, maintaining and evolving the PPDR network system. The main goal of the event was to provide relevant PPDR entities (police, firefighters, first responders, municipalities, and civil protection agencies) with the demonstration of new technological solutions in specific operational scenarios. The presence of 5G-EPICENTRE was integrated in the Altice/MEO Empresas booth. Based on OneSource’s Mobitrust platform, multiple situational awareness use cases were demonstrated making use of drones, AR glasses, biosensors, environmental sensors and AI-based enhanced decision-making.  Especially for the SIRESP Bootcamp event, a TETRA-Private 4G/5G integration scenario was built and demonstrated, based on 2 federated HPE-Athonet Private 4G/5G/IMS networks (tactical bubbles) operating in different frequency bands and one relaying to the other, including a connection of the first one to a TETRA radio and a military radio, on one side, and to a Altice/MEO SIP trunk (public network) on the other. This scenario, built with HPE-Athonet technology, enabled the connectivity between legacy narrowband (LMR/PMR/TETRA, military radios) voice-based technology to wideband 3GPP-based Private networks and then to the public network from Altice/MEO.  Making use of Altice Labs’ BotSchool platform and Mobitrust APIs, first responders’ real time vital data (e.g. ambient temperature, pulse rate, positioning) was made available through a legacy voice communication interface, which proved to be a promising solution for many practical scenarios in which voice is the only available communication form.

News & Events​ 5G-EPICENTRE @ PSC Europe 5G-EPICENTRE actively participated in the prestigious PSCEurope Conference 2023, on the 5th and 6th  of December 2023.  PSCE is a key actor in the area of public safety and security in Europe, driving innovation and fostering exchanges between experts in the field. The Winter Conference of 2023 was organized in Hague, Netherlands, while it is to be considered one of the most influential events across EU. This highly respected event gathered PPDR corporates and industry experts, as well as innovative projects in the fields of public safety, CMX promoting the knowledge and experiences exchange. NOVA as a partner of the 5G-EPICENTRE participated in the prestigious PSCE Conference, which was hosted by the Dutch Police, at the Dutch Training Centre Facilities, presented the open end-to-end 5G-EPICENTRE experimentation program, which has been officially launched, was presented. 5G-EPICENTRE representatives had the opportunity to interact and exchange know-how with other innovative telecommunication corporates, PPDR ICT services/applications providers, social and public security stakeholders, as well as government representatives.  The platform is designed to uptake public protection and disaster relief (PPDR) operations and applications for end-users. In addition, it provides a great set of tools, which contribute to the state-of-the-art and beyond advancement of the applications that will be registered to the program. in the era of 5G networks, helping the providers to maximize the performance of their solutions. The project’s experimentation program aims to empower PPDR providers to create cutting-edge 5G applications while validating these solutions to effectively meet the major needs and tackle the challenges involved in the field.  The 5G-EPICENTRE Platform aims to run experiments from SMEs and developers of PPDR applications hosted in the infrastructure of four (4) testbeds (5GENESIS Málaga, 5G VINNI Aveiro, 5G Berlin and 5G Barcelona). The main purpose and major benefit of the experiments is the validation of the functionality of both the individual components, as well as the integrated solutions, providing advanced analytics in a real 5G environment. We were honoured to welcome the Berlin Fire Department as our distinguished guest, highlighting how 5G-based technologies revolutionise firefighting. News & Events​ 5G-EPICENTRE Participation in Smart City Expo Congress 2023 Iquadrat (IQU) and 5G-EPICENTRE actively participated in the Smart City Expo World Congress 2023, on 7-9 of November. The congress is organized in Barcelona since 2011, while considered as one of the world’s biggest and most influential event, for smart cities and urban innovation, focusing on the new paradigm of green, digital and resilient cities.IQU team had the opportunity to interact and exchange know-how with other innovative startups and SMEs, governments’ representatives, as well as with PPDR and telecommunication entities. The team showcased the 5G-EPICENTRE experimentation program and the major benefits of the project’s platform on the development of innovative and technologically advanced solutions in the era of next-generation networks. The project’s experimentation program aims to empower and validate solutions for Public Protection and Disaster Relief to effectively meet the major challenges that modern cities face due to climate change and the associated risks.

News & Events​ 5G-EPICENTRE Participation in ICT-41 Plugfest (IEEE-WFIoT) OneSource, as member of 5G-EPICENTRE, was a proud participant in the ICT-41 Plugfest, a satellite event of the IEEE World Forum on Internet of Things, with a demonstration focused on “IoT applications for enhancing first responders’ situational awareness and safety”, including a brief introduction to 5G-EPICENTRE and Mobitrust projects. This event took place at Altice Labs and University of Aveiro, from October 23rd to October 24th. The demonstration showcased the integration of multiple facets of Mobitrust, with a strong emphasis on real-time video feeds, environmental sensors, biosensors, and AI support for decision-making to enhance situational awareness, all supported by 5G connectivity, provided by Altice Labs/MEO. Participants had the opportunity for hands-on testing of all the wearables, including AR glasses with real-time video feeds and metrics from a drone and a VR version of the Mobitrust platform. Notably, two firefighter departments from Aveiro, The National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection and APS – Ports of Sines and the Algarve Authority, SA, were actively involved in this event. This multidisciplinary exchange of knowledge is essential for identifying best practices and approaches to advance this cutting-edge technology for the individuals who can benefit from it the most.

News & Events​ 5G-EPICENTRE at NATIONAL FIRE FIGHTERS CONGRESS 2023 We are glad to share the successful presence of 5G-EPICENTRE project, represented by our coordinator, AIRBUS, at the National Fire Fighters Congress for 2023, that took place in Toulouse, from the 4th to the 7th of October. This national congress, organized by the French fire department is a major event that brings together more than 3.000 delegates, from the PPDR and Safety Services stakeholders, hosts about 500 exhibitors, while gathers the interest of tens of thousands of visitors. The event is dedicated on effective fire management and public protection with innovative solutions from all domains being actively present. During the event, AIRBUS provided detailed presentation of the project videos and the 5G-EPICENTRE experimentation program to participants and of the 5G platform, as well as the individual solutions developed during the 5G-EPICENTRE project. Attendees were introduced to the project’s open, federated, end-to-end 5G experimentation platform and its capabilities, along with the Slicing Features and their importance in Fire Protection. More specifically, the 5G network slicing contributes in boosting applications efficiency, capacity, high bandwidth and customization to the user’s needs and requirements for the development of Public Protection Digital Solutions. The overall action supported actively the engagement with the PPDR community (agencies, ICT and service providers and of course the heroes of our daily lives), the ideation, the exchange on know-how, and of course the feedback received on the 5G-EPICENTRE solutions and the advancements from its use cases was valuable. The participants in the French National Firefighter Congress also had the opportunity to the fruitful discussions and exchange insights on the possibilities provided by 5G networks in alternate public protection scenarios, acknowledging the multiple of benefits that arise from effective communication in disaster and crisis management (reducing the latency gaps), the acceleration and speed-up of the decision making process and the potential advanced facilitation from innovative applications for PPDR agencies across EU countries, who face the major challenge and consequences from the climate change. 

News & Events​ 5G-EPICENTRE Participation in SIRESP Tech Days 2023 From May 31 to June 2, 5G-EPICENTRE proudly participated in the SIRESP Tech Days 2023 (Management of Digital Security and Emergency Networks) in the Military Academy of Amadora, contributing to the discussion of future critical communications.  As our project focuses on leveraging 5G as the next-gen wireless technology to enhance Public Protection and Disaster Relief (PPDR) operations, SIRESP Tech Days 2023 was an ideal platform to showcase our work, connect with industry experts and promote our mission of developing robust software solutions for PPDR.

News & Events​ Showcase 5G-EPICENTRE’s Cutting-Edge Capabilities to Málaga Police Málaga, Spain – On May 4th, OneSource, incollaboration with the University of Málaga (UMA), organized a demonstration of the advanced capabilities of the 5G-EPICENTRE platform for the Málaga Police. The event showcased the integration of multiple vectors of Mobitrust (UC4), emphasizing situational awareness through real-time video feeds, environment sensors, bio sensors, and AI support for decision-making. Information visualization played a vital role in the demonstration, showcasing seamless integration from the Command-and-Control Centre to the field. Technologies like Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) were harnessed to provide immersive experiences, empowering officers with enhanced visualization and analysis of critical situations. This comprehensive approach enabled efficient response strategies and improved overall operational effectiveness, delivering a strong motivation and support for the usage of 5G networks for mission critical communications. This successful demonstration garnered the interest of the Málaga Police for future events in the coming months, which are already planned and under preparation. Moreover, by providing a glimpse into the platform’s capabilities, the demonstration received valuable feedback from the Málaga Police, offering insights into stakeholder requirements and needs. This feedback will guide future refinements and optimizations of the 5G-EPICENTRE platform to ensure it aligns with the expectations of the PPDR community. The 5G-EPICENTRE project is poised to shape the future of public safety by leveraging advanced technologies and fostering collaboration among industry, academia and PPDR agencies. As the interest from the Málaga Police indicates, the demonstration on May 4th was a significant milestone in showcasing the platform’s capabilities and initiating a partnership that will drive innovation in the field of public safety.
